Theme: "Keep the Integrity of the Program"

Darren discussed his background with prison programs (e.g. Children’s functions, Christmas programs). 1992-3 was when inmate children got involved - some staff feedback not good, but inmate feedback (even after released) was positive and how it helped keep the family together. When I came to WSR, had the desire to do this here. Stats show that inmate’s kids are more likely to offend - thus keeping the kids with the family is useful. Kids grow up fast - they have less and less in common with their father in prison - but a church service helps them to stay together and do better with their family when released. They are likely to attend church on the outside because they had that in common during the incarceration period.

Will not be able to start services until June rather than May as planned. Two reasons: Chapel is being renovated due to mold and space is not available, and WSR is one chaplain short and they misplaced some paperwork that could affect inmates who signed up but could not go due to paperwork problems. Darren and Bob agreed to start in June. Bob shared that he tried to contact GVT for advice but believed that he would concur. PFC is here to serve the institution and the inmates and has a long-range vision.

Darren discussed the prison system, points, etc., and how WSR is one of three closed custody facilities in the State. 1998 the four facilities became "one" which posed many problems, thus WSR is difficult to administer, so this glitch of having to start in June needs to be worked through.

Programs and ministries have to earn respect and pay their dues, so have a "stick to it" attitude.

·         Discussed inmate manipulation.

·         Discussed volunteer commitment of 12 months and to be diligent in fulfilling your obligation.

·         What do you do with an unruly child in the service? Darren says a skilled volunteer should go to the child to get them to settle down, that not working, have the child removed to another room.

·         Consistently reiterated that questions by inmates go to the Group Leader.

·         Only the GL can request an inmate or a child to be removed from a service.

·         Inmates who ask for materials to be brought in are sent to Bob and Bob to report this to the attending officer.
